Yesterday evening there were protest marches in both Thessaloniki and Athens in order to demonstrate against an attack on the Immigrant Hangout (Steki Metanaston) in the Exarchia district of the Greek capital. Last week a fragmentation grenade was thrown at the building while a meeting of Greek conscientious objectors was taking place. Thankfully, the device exploded outside the hall where the meeting was being held and no casualties were reported.

In less than a week there will be a protest rally to mark the arrival of the prime minister of Greece, Kostas Karamanlis to open the annual trade fair here in Thessaloniki. He is guaranteed a "warm reception" by trade unionist and many other groups unhappy with the New Democracy administration's handling of the economy. Unemployment, rising prices, stagnant wages combined with this weeks swingeing tax hikes means that the only people happy to see Karamanlis in the city will be the cops looking to boost their overtime bonuses.

It's almost a year since Greece's finest kicked the crap out of me for taking pictures (click here) during last year's peaceful march. Lesson learned. This time I'll have my running shoes on.

It seems the excitement never stops in this place. I just got back from a PAOK protest rally in the centre. I can't think of a better opportunity to some street photography,. It doesn't get more dramatic than this, at least on Sundays. Fans were protesting what they consider unfair treatment by the government over the issue of the club's debts.
